Sharing on Must-haves for the Global Plastic Treaty and Our work

Right before the Global Plastic Treaty INC-5 (5th Session of the Inter-governmental Negotiation Committee), we held an event in Busan with 4 China CSOs, featuring “Action Together: CSOs in China Against Global Plastic Pollution”.

We don’t need a treaty that can be easiy implemented by all countries, but makes no real changes on the current plastic pollution. Therefore, we stated four must-haves in the treaty text for the plastic text at INC-5. They are:
1, global bans and phase-outs of the most harmful plastic and associated chemicals;
2, binding global product design requirements and systems for the transition toward a non-toxic circular economy,
3, aligned financial flows and sufficient resources for systems change; and
4, decision-making mechanisms that guarantee measures can be adapted and strengthened over time.

I also introduced our role in plastic pollution reduction in China. One is to build a bridge between China and the global conservationist community; another is to seek practical plastic governance including EPR, but beyond the typical “der Grüne Punkt” system.
