A Korean-Japan-China MPA Conservation Forum in Jeju

Two weeks of MPA!

Invited by Korean CIES, Citizens’ Institute for Environmental Studies, I participated in a Korea-China-Japan MPA forum in Jeju, Korea. The civil societies and research institutes among three countries attended and we all introduced our progress.

I presented our studies on biodiversity hotspots in the Yellow Sea Ecoregion, which is the most relevant topic to the three-country forum, as well as our pilots in Chongming Dongtan and Changdao.

I also learned much from other countries. However, I must say that there is more observation than action. The most similar presentation was from Jeju, where I was impressed by the diversity of Jeju island, in terms of geology, ecosystem, and biodiversity.

The forum planned to launch a joint statement. However, I was not in the position to make the decision, and I also had concerns on it, since it did not propose clear asks to clear audience.
